Our History

1901
Butuan Parochial School — The Beginning
The roots of Father Saturnino Urios University trace back to October 21, 1901, when Spanish Jesuit missionary Saturnino Urios established a small boys’ school in Butuan City known as Butuan Parochial School.
The school was created to provide Catholic education that nurtured both intellectual and moral development during a time when public schools prohibited religious instruction. The first school building was a simple brick structure located near the old Butuan church.
Fr. Urios believed that faith and education must go together in building strong communities, a vision that would shape the institution for more than a century.
1927
Expansion of Elementary Education
Despite financial difficulties and social challenges during the early American period, the school continued to grow.
By 1927, the institution gained official government recognition as an elementary school, strengthening its role in providing quality Catholic education in the region.
Following the death of Saturnino Urios in 1916, missionary educators continued his work of forming students academically and spiritually.
